2020 Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient

Beth Burrough

Back to Recipients

Beth Burrough is a 1981 graduate of Haddonfield Memorial High School where she excelled in in the classroom and in athletics.  Those talents took her to Princeton University where she earned her B.A.in History and played varsity basketball.  Beth co-captained the Tigers 1985 Ivy League Championship Team.  After a few years in the business world, Beth enrolled at the Harvard Graduate School of Business earning her Master of Business Administration in 1991. At Harvard, just like at Princeton, her leadership was recognized as she was elected Vice-President for Academics of the Women’s Student Association and selected by the faculty to tutor Finance.

In the summer of 1990, she served as an intern in consumer products for Johnson and Johnson/McNeil.  This was the beginning of what would be a 15 year successful career with Johnson and Johnson. Beth rose from Assistant Product Director to executive positions as Worldwide Vice-President (Global Consumer Oral Health) and Head of Strategy (Global Biologics Strategic Marketing).

Ms. Burrough was incredibly successful in her roles as a Product Director, Group Director and Executive Director as she climbed the corporate ladder at Johnson and Johnson.  She was given myriad responsibilities in these positions.  She performed strategic and financial valuations of products for acquisition, licensing or development. She created the business analytics case for acquiring Monistat 1 from Bristol-Myers Squibb.  Beth managed the “Stayfree”, “Carefree” and “Serenity” brands far exceeding the expected profits for these products.  She identified strategic web alliances and new businesses to grow revenue and save costs.

In her positions as Worldwide Vice President and Head of Strategy, her responsibilities included
managing the top seven countries across all continents to drive sales and strategy, creating and executing a worldwide strategic plan and growth platforms for oral health, acquiring Orpharma, partnering with research and development to create new products, leading the Committee on Immune and Inflammatory disease that developed strategic plans for 5 key research and development areas, and chairing the Task Force on Fibrosis and Osteoarthritis.

During her time at Johnson and Johnson, Ms. Burrough was recognized for her extraordinary leadership and achievement both in and outside the corporation.  She was selected for the J & J Steering Committee Women’s Leadership Council and the J & J Director’s Leadership Council.
Beth received the Johnson and Johnson Achievement and Grandview Awards in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998 and 1999.  In 1996, she was given the Edison Award, the healthcare industry award for innovation in creating and launching Monistat 3. In 2000, the YWCA of New jersey presented her with TWIN Award as a leading woman in industry in New Jersey.

In 2006, Ms. Burrough sought a new challenge. With her background in consumer health care at Johnson and Johnson behind her, Beth and her husband David along with their partners the Andersons created Purfoods LLC/Mom’s Meals.   Beth developed the health care strategy, growth platforms, and products (post-discharge and chronic care) that helped grow the organization from an entrepreneurial start-up to a mid-size company serving over 50 million meals a year.  The company is now the leading home-delivered meal solution for seniors and patients in the country.
Beth served as the start-up’s chief marketing officer and head of strategy.  She focused on the company’s potential to improve the lives of seniors and medical patients by providing home delivered and health condition focused meals directly to the home.  Marketed as Mom’s Meals, these nutritious selections help seniors to stay healthy or manage chronic illnesses while maintaining the dignity and independence of living at home. The Iowa-based company’s meals are delivered in 48 states by its own trucks or third-party carriers. Medicaid and Health Insurers generally pay for their members’ meals.
Specifically, she created the positioning and branding for their core brands, originated and negotiated new business partnerships with the health plans, hospitals and health care companies to provide reimbursed meals for Medicare Advantage and Care Transitions programs and led the team that delivered the successful RFP for Kaiser as their home delivered meals partner. She wrote white papers, delivered clinical presentations and was the company’s expert spokesperson on “The Importance of Nutrition in the Care Plan”.

After selling Purfoods/Mom’s Meals, Beth and her husband have seeded and are partners in several new ventures in healthcare, including autism therapy and behavioral health.  She combines this with exceptional service to numerous organizations for which she has a passion.
She is a mentor for the non-profit Silicon Couloir that aligns entrepreneurship with a community vision to promote a diverse economy and a healthy environment. Ms. Burrough recently became the Board Chair for Hole Food Rescue, a non-profit that works to reduce food waste and cultivate food security in Teton County, Wyoming.   Beth has served on the boards of the American Red Cross of Central New Jersey, The Stonybrook-Millstone Watershed of Central NJ and Vice-Chair of Davidson College’s Parents Council.   She is also a trustee of two environmental groups: American Rivers Council (national), Northern Rockies Rivers Council.  Beth has also served on several organizations that support women.  She has been a board member for Women in Balance, a non-profit focused on women’s hormone health.  She also served her alma mater as a board member of the Princeton University Women’s Leadership Council for 11 years, and the Women’s Basketball Alumni Council for 8 years where she also serves as a career mentor.

Beth has also found time to summit Grand Teton, Mt. Moran and Mt. Kilimanajaro.  She has completed three marathons and qualified for the Boston Marathon.  She has skied the 20 kilometer glacier Vallee Blanche Chamonix.   She has recently taken up backcountry skiing and long distance hiking and enjoys venturing to new places in the Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone.
