Christian Giudice ’92 Signs His New Book

"A Fire Burns Within"

On Friday, November 25, 2016, Jersey Java looked a bit like an HMHS reunion.  A steady stream of alumni and alumni parents came through the doors to greet Christian Giudice, class of 1992, boxing writer, biographer, and high school teacher.

Visiting family in Haddonfield for Thanksgiving, Chris brought with him his newest work, “A Fire Burns Within” which tells the compelling tale of Wilfredo “Bazooka” Gomez, a Puerto Rican boxer who fought his way out of poverty to international fame as a three- time world titleholder.

Giudice’s previous books include Hands of Stone: The Life and Legend of Roberto Duran and Beloved Warrior: The Rise and Fall of Alexis Arguello. His passion for boxing stems from watching fights in Atlantic City in the 1980s with his father. He now writes for and has his own website:

When asked about why he chose to write about Gomez, Chris said, I was inspired by a friend who encouraged him to take a look at the career of the Puerto Rican fighter. “Watching Gomez fight, I was mesmerized by his boxing style…he had an element of greatness” said Chris. Gomez record speaks for itself as he had 17 knockouts in 17 championship title defenses.

Recently, Chris returned to HMHS to talk about his writing with current students. He said, “I tried to impress upon them how incredible the writing journey is especially if you are passionate about your subject. There is real fulfillment in the process”.

In addition to his work covering boxing in Latin America, Chris also teaches English at Harper Middle College in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Chris can be reached at or  His books are available on
